Extraordinary in the Ordinary

A basic desire that most people have is to be special, or unique. We often desire to live in a way that gets other people’s attention, for many different reasons. Some aim for fame: getting the most twitter followers or having a certain number of people say “hi” to you as you walk through your campus. Others desire fortune: making enough money so that others recognize the success and champion them for it. Some a talent or gift: putting your entire self into one thing and having it be your label and worth if you’re really good at it. No matter what the ultimatum, everyone desires significance. It is so easy to determine whether or not what we are doing is special by our own standards. If we find ourselves in a season that we have been in before, we may decide that what we are doing is mundane or pointless; which could discourage us from seeking out the Lord and how He wants to use us. We can also go to the other end of the spectrum and say that what we are doing is more unique or necessary than what others are doing because we find ourselves in a certain place or surrounded by a certain group of people; which could lead to us backsliding once we leave that season or once circumstances change. However, what I’ve come to realize lately is that it is not my place to determine the worthiness of people, or my time. Since accepting Jesus into my heart and truly desiring to know and walk with Him, He has shown me countless amounts of things. I think one of the biggest things over the past year that He has shown me though is that He can take any circumstance or season we find ourselves in and use it for His glory and for our good. One amazing thing about a relationship with Jesus is that we don’t have to live up to any standards or limits. Paul says in Colossians that when Jesus died he broke off all principalities and powers that were keeping us separated from God. Along with the principalities and powers, He took away our inability as imperfect beings to be used by God. Since Jesus died on the cross for us, we have no limit to how we can see God and there is definitely no limit that God puts on how He can use us if we are willing. The point of all this is that if we are willing to see God anywhere, He’ll show up everywhere. One thing that the Lord has shown me since being back from my DTS in Hawaii and Fiji is that He always has something to say and something to show me. I came home with the fear of not having any impactful ministry to pour into or any ways to see the power of God move in crazy ways; but He has totally shown me otherwise. He has given me so many opportunities in these short past few weeks to spend time with Him and grow in His word, see Him being made famous by others here, and to continue to encourage people in their faith and proclaim the name of Jesus every day! It’s really incredible. The pointless limits that we put on ourselves are simply that: pointless. When we tell ourselves what God is capable of, that takes our sights off of the real love and power of the love of Jesus. The love that broke off all principalities and powers so that He could have an eternal relationship with a world full of sinners! If that is the love of God then He definitely is capable of showing up in our everyday lives, no matter where we find ourselves.
